Circular 32: Information on Cyber Attacks on Anti-Doping Athlete Management System (ADAMS)

Published Fri 07 Oct 2016

You may all have read in the news about the hacking of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Anti-Doping Athlete Management System (ADAMS) during the recent Rio Olympic Games.

2          Based on reports by WADA, only the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) information of athletes have been accessed and compromised. WADA, which is based in Canada, is working closely with the Canadian and other international law enforcement authorities to address this matter.  The hackers had accessed ADAMS via email spear phishing and the information illegally obtained from ADAMS have been released progressively since 13 September 2016. A  phishing email aims to trick the recipient into divulging information, such as their username and password, to gain access to an application of interest.

3          There is likelihood that TUE records of our Singapore athletes may be published. ADAMS remains a useful tool for Anti-Doping Singapore (ADS) to implement an effective testing programme in Singapore. We strongly advise athletes who receive suspicious emails asking for their confidential ADAMS log-in credentials to never divulge them to anyone.

4          We would like to assure all National Sports Associations and athletes that the TUE programme remains a necessary part of elite sport, as athletes can obtain approval to use a prescribed prohibited substance or method for the treatment of a legitimate medical condition.

5          The actions of this group of cyber hackers only serve to undermine the TUE programme and all parties who serve to protect clean sport. This circular seeks to clarify any doubts you may have on this incident and your continued support for doping-free sport in Singapore.
